Diamonds in the news: Govt concessions sought for Argyle diamond mine.
Excerpt:
Business and civic leaders in the East Kimberley are urging the Western Australian Government to give serious consideration to royalty concessions for the Argyle diamond mine - the region's biggest employer.
Mining company Rio Tinto has asked for tax reductions or cheaper water to make its planned underground expansion viable.
The current mine at Argyle will come to an end in 2008.
The mine employs 350 local people and sources goods and services from the area worth about $20 million a year.
Under its expansion, the workforce sourced locally would increase from 40 to 80 per cent.
Local shire president Barbara Johnson says the impact of the mine's closure would be enormous.
