Diamonds in the news: Diamond watchdog bares its teeth at Congo.
Excerpt:
The removal recently of the Republic of Congo from the ranks of legitimate diamond producers shows that the industry has both the will and the ability to combat trade in conflict diamonds.
This is the unequivocal view of Abbey Chikane, immediate past chairman of the Kimberley Process, which was launched by 52 countries in January last year in a bid to eliminate trade in conflict, or blood, diamonds.
The term is derived from diamonds that are mined in a war zone, often by under-age and underpaid labour, and sold clandestinely to finance an insurgent or invading army's military efforts.
