SASKATOON - The Canadian diamond industry might be one of the first to benefit from the Synchrotron in Saskatoon, now that studies are underway to determine ethical diamonds from questionable ones.
The few diamonds produced in Canada are laser-etched with a distinctive polar bear. It is supposed to be a guarantee the stones are not so-called "blood diamonds." Those gems come from places like Sierra Leone and Rwanda and have been used to bankroll deadly civil wars. However, there is nothing stopping unscrupulous dealers from engraving any diamond with the mark.
