i am in a theater group that has been trying to perform Willy wonka and the chocolate factory for about 6 months. Warner Brothers wont give us the rights to the music, and now i understand why. I am really happy that Tim Burton is directiong becasue he is the best director out there, but i am furious that Warner Brothers is such a powerhungry company that they wont let a non profit theater group perform it ,but they will spend millions of dollars to have it be remade.

Try producing the play version and adding the music from the CD. A vocal eliminator works well in dubbing out the lyrics and allowing the actors to add their own voice....eliminating the pit as well. It worked in my middle school production!

...Good golly. None of you have ever auditioned for a movie have you? It isn't just going to happen like "hey guys! we need a bunch of kids who think they have some tallent to try out!" No no no... to think that is just ignorance (not to say that anyone here is ignorant...) But just having "a heart full of talent" isn't going to get you crap. Weather or not you are good, you need 3 things: 1. You need the propor education and training, and the certificates that go along with that. 2. When you have the propor training, and some experience under your belt, you need an agent. That means that some company has to think you are good enough to "own" you. (and they really do "own" you) The company and agent will find jobs that you are qualified for. You don't just say "hey, I wan't to be in this! Get me there!" Nope. Doesn't work like that. and 3. You have to be damn lucky. Only 2% of all trained actors are actually working right now. What do you think that means for the untrained ones? Ain't gonna happen! So, regardless of your "credentials" of past experience, you MUST have the propor training from either a dedicated acting school, or (preferably) a college degree. So, uh... I don't really know everyone's actual situations, but it sounds like you don't have everything you need yet. If you are younger, and a college degree is not an option yet, don't just expect that the Disney channel is going to pick you up cause you look cute. There are child acting classes, and child acting agencies. If you are under 18, this is what you need to look into and learn about... Unless, of course, you are damn lucky, and knows somebody that knows somebody that can "hook you up."
Woa, I hope this wasn't offensive to anyone! It is late, and I am feeling very ornery, and felt like throwing in my two cents worth. By the way... DOES anyone have any info on the auditions? J/K Hahahaha...ha...heh...huh...hmm...Anyway... Hmm.. Maybe I can think of something that doesn't crush anybody's hopes... nope, can't think of a darn thing right now. Maybe another day. :)

Thank you Leer. I don't think anyone who is serious should feel crushed by your good advice. Going places in showbusiness is extremely difficult. There is nothing wrong with having dreams and going for gold but to get there start with the basics. Learn the craft and there is a lot to learn. Then learn the business. Then assess if you have something to offer that will make you stand out. The big stars got where they got because of a combination of hard work, research, grind, talent and luck. And a thick skin, because the rejection in show business is very big and can often be done in a cruel way. Best of luck to everyone!
Posted by: GilbertZ on September 7, 2003 03:55 PM
Hey Kate. I just deleted a loooooong post that basicly said: Yes, I do know what I am talking about, and Yes, I am an ass. I am majoring in film/theatre directing/producing rigt now, so I do know a bit about this stuff. (Dang cocky directors! Sorry! It is just how I am :S ) If anyone really wants to know how to audition, look up the nearest talent agency. (that may be kinda hard if you live in the central USA. All of the "big" stuff is found on or near the coasts) Hey, there is even a link at the top of this page! Go for it, click on it. Open casting calls are a little different (in many ways, mosty bad) But the best thing to do is make a resume, and apply to an agency. every agency is different (especially East coast compared to West coast) ... dang. rambling again. well, if anyone does really want to know, e-mail me.

Hi Gang!
Okey people....get a damn grip of yourselves, geez...all of you exactly like those greedy, selfish and self obssessed children and parentss in the charlie and the chocolate factory story, or is it a gimmick to proclaim a lucky spot in the movie? Common people....stop acting like an agent for slugworth or complete dorks...Its "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory", the story its self is a learning techique for all children and grown up's...its what made me the well rounded and appreciative person that I am today, thanks many the books I read as a child and having Roald Dahl's books be apart of that collection. The 70's movie "Willy Wonka" scarred the shit out of me and I am very disappointed that the movie was nothing like the book, I know that Tim Burton will do a fabulous job on recreating the story from the book, vs having it be made from the original movie. I think Johnny Depp is the perfect choice for Mr. Willy Wonka and the redeemable unfortunate actress "Winnona Ryder" to play Charlie Buckets poor and famished mother (fresh from the saks 5th Ave. ordeal...what a genius!!!!) and Mr. Slugworth played by talented Christopher Walken...I couldnt have asked for more. There was a bit more to charlie Bucket from what I recall from the book which puts him back on the map way before Harry Potter, and that all the children that were selected by mr wonka seem to be around the age of 5 thru 8 years old and the 4 spoiled ones were a whole lot synical and vicious to each other that mr. Dahl intensions were to compare them to repulsive personalities hence blood thursty great white sharks, hungry wolves, and rattle snakes, on the other hand the oompa loompa's were little african pygmies that were rescued by mr wonka by the snazwangler beast and yes, lets not forget, the factory...it was filled with mind blowing candy that was out of this world. I feel like a kid biting on a chocolate bar once again, and hoping I would be the selected one to engage inside the splendor and mystery of the Chocolate factory....now here this, "Wizard of OZ"...the real story from Frank L. Baum, now here is an idea to make a cash cow movie epic....not the musical, but an authentic take on the story, with tecnology in special effects, I would like to see the beautiful and talented "Natalie Portman" play Ozma of Oz....now thats a movie worth waiting to see....bye for now

Unlike most of you, I do have an agent. I've been a performer sense a very small age. I've done everything from commercials to theatre. Don't think that just because you have an agent that all of a sudden you will be in these big time movies and on the cover of Teen People or something. It doesnt work like that. It takes hard work and tons of determination (not saying that u people dont have this or anything). Not to destroy the mood, but according to what I've heard and observed, I highly doubt that this movie will have open casting calls (sorry to burst the bubble)( from what I've seen and delt with they usually don't just open up these types of movies to the public). This is a mojor motion picture, if they need extras they will go to angencies and look for people (people with headshots and all that jazz). If you really want to be in big time movies and find out about tons of auditions and junk, I would recomend that you get and angent. Thats the best way to start doing things like this.
Posted by: Maraya on October 21, 2003 10:06 PM
um, i dont have an agent, much expirience, and i have not yet been showcased in commercials, ads or magazines of any sort. i am much like charlie bucket in the fact that i am poor white trash...however, we differ in the fact that i would not consider a loaf of bread a banquet. but please, if anyone out there has any type of information about auditions for this movie i would be extremely greatful if you would kindly email me with this information.
thank you

hi i just wanted every one to know because i am not about to email you all that there are audditions being held. But they are not being adverticed just to any random people because it would turn out to be a wrek if they let just anyone in for an audditions. To find out about audditions the best thing to do would be to get an agent or speak to someone who might have further info on this.I infact have heard times and dates of audditions but am not suppose to just post it on a website where every one may see it.So just letting every one know that audditions have started and if you would really like a role in this film you better get your self an agent or a merical.thank you

I really want to be in this movie and i think I will be good in this movie because i dont freeze up in front of people and I think a good example of that is I compete in cheerleading in front of hundreds of people and don't get scared.I think I will be a great actress and singer! Thank you! Have a great day!

Hey my name is nicole and i'm 13 years old I would really like to be in this movie as veruca salt because ina way i am really a bratt and I could really be a good talent for this movie I'm in tons of school plays sometimes as leads and as you can tell of that i'm not afraid of the spotlight i've always wanted to be an actress but wasn't sure how I would do untile I came across this website and willy wanka and the choclate factorie is my favorite movie of all time i'm also a really good singer I listen to all types of music like classical, rock, jazz, and rap so if any one could give me any information about this movie role I would really appreciate it cause being an actress is my life long dream and I would appreciate it if you could give me the oppertunity to play in this film
Posted by: nicole on January 4, 2004 04:41 AM
Hey, all those guys out der crushin every1s hopes need to shut up sometimes. yeah alright most of these ppl probably don't have a chance of getting in da film, but you don't have a right to rant on and moan about how they're neva gonna make it and neva fulfil their dream of becoming a full time actor/actress, at least they've got a dream and a goal, even if it is out of their league. we should appreciate some of these ppls courage, we should have faith in every1 and in everything they want to do in their life, we need to at least give dem a chance. they all no there's an almost impossible chance of getting in da film and becoming famous, but there is that slight chance that they all hang onto. its up to them it's their choice to try and pursue it. thanx for reading this and GOOD LUCK 2 EVERY1!!! xxxx

Hello all, I as everyone else would like to audition too. And all of you that said that they wouldn't have an open call because this is a big movie, think again. Last year they had an open call for the roles of wendy, john, and michael for "Peter Pan" thats out right now, so who knows it could happen! But anyways if you do know the actual info ppllleaase tell me, i have been acting int theater all my life and have been dying to do film but my parents won't let me geta agent because they don't want to be driving to LA all the time. Just the place time and date of these auditions is all i ask for, because my parents won't let me get an agent. thanks!

I love Acting and any one that knows me says that acting is my future cause i am out going and cute and spunky and all that crap..... but than i read abou how u absolutly have to have a agent..... there were people telling us we didn't have a chance but do those people know how we feel to be waiting ever so pasiontly for ur big brake? I was accepted as 1 of 30 out of 300 people wanted for a acting school but we didn't have the time or money.... do they know how it feels to have ur hand closed on ur dreams but not be able to pull them down.they don't. i admit i am desperate but if u only knew my talent and the talent of those poor other helpless people u'd so totally give us a brake. as for the people out there telling us they know when the auditions are and that we are all to late, all i have to say is SHUT UP and knok it off.... the least u could do is let us hope desperatly...So i do totally love johnny depp but who dosn't ...whats it to u if i do u seem to wanto go mondo warpo and say just cause u have some crush dosn't mean u are going to make it anywere. yea well thats not the onlly reason we are trying to get info so please stop with the neggatorys and PLEASE SOMEONE GIVE US SOME USFULL INFO

But here's is something that none of you all seem to think of! POST AUDITION INFORMATION HERE!!!! its easier then someone sending emails to EVERYONE on the message board here now isnt it? So, if you do decide to email though, feel free to email me too, lol.
Posted by: Josh on February 5, 2004 10:46 PM
Hi. I just read the whole list of comments. Good luck to everyone who wants to try out, and you stupid idiots who are crushing everyone's dreams...cut the crap. Whos gives a care if we don't get to be in the movie? They are hopes and dreams. Those of you who are insensitive to other peoples hopes and dreams, back off. If you are so insensitive, you must have everything in the world that you have ever wanter. You must be perfect, cause you've obviously never had a hope or a dream yourself! Anyway, keep it up movie hopefulls!
I also want to be in the movies badly. Actually, I sent a letter to Kohnny Depp and to Tim Burton about it. I have always loved the movie, and I played Veruca Salt in a school play. I was very good actually. :) I am very used to playing a brat. I have played Veruca in Willy Wonka, Mrs. Dubois in To Kill A Mockingbird, and many other bratty, mean, self-absorbed characters ranging from small children to elderly ladies. Ho-Hum...maybe it's type casting. Anyway, I have paid professional acting experience acting on an Island in Maine.
DOES ANYONE LIVE IN MAINE?
I am 14 and I have VERY short brown hair and blue eyes. I am NOT skinny. I'm about five one and i weight about 110 pounds. I adore the stage and cameras. I soak up the attention! I can't express how much I love attention and being on stage.
DID ANYONE WATCH THE RALLY FOR JOHN KERRY IN MAINE? I WAS ON TV RIGHT BEHIND KERRY. I WAS WEARING A PINK SWEATER AND HOLDING A SIGN FOR KERRY!
Anyway, best wishes to all the movie hopefulls, and all you pessimists out there, KEEP YOU MOUTHS SHUT. Like I always say, IF YOU DON't HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!
DOES ANYONE HERE LIKE THE BAND GUSTER?
DOES ANYONE HERE LIKE HARRY POTTER?
SOMEBODY TALK TO ME!
WELL, GOODBYE FOR NOW. GOODLUCK!

OMG IM SORRY I DIDN'T REALIZE I POSTED THAT TWICE. A THOUSAND APOLOGIES. MAY A HERD OF ANGRY CAMELS SAVAGELY RIP EACH STRAND OF HAIR FROM MY HEAD.

Im 14, a british actor loads of expirence but no agent yet. I'd love too be in this movie and any information would be greatly apprecitated thanks
Posted by: Lydia on February 11, 2004 02:31 PM
Hey, everyone, ok so I know you've heard this a million times, but I need this audition information. I am so passionate about the role of Veruca Salt, thats VERUCA without an "n," 12-year-old. Anyway, I don't look anything like Veruca; I have bright, red curly hair and brown eyes, and I'm 5'2" and weigh about 120. However, I know that if given the opportunity, I could be the perfect Veruca Salt. I have a soft, sweet voice, but a demanding side to my personality. I talk to my dad in exactly the same way that she speaks to hers, probably because I hate my dad, but anyway, I would really appreciate any information on ANY auditions, even if I never have a chance in the world of making it.
Posted by: Adriana on February 12, 2004 10:57 AM
The casting to play Veruca Salt is happening at private girls schools it happened to the one near me. sorry to all those people who wanted the role i was desperate to audition to. Voilet Beaugerade is still up for grabs.
Posted by: Emma on February 13, 2004 11:52 AM
I think all you people should really think. Are you really gonna be picked.I think not.And you should all really talk about Johnny Depp more nicely.God all you care about is how he looks.Did-
n't you ever hear the saying "Use Your Heart and Forget Your Eyes"?If not then you'll hear it soon.I mean come on.There are better things about him, like his kids, his work, his movies.Just don't talk about his looks all the time you know.Well I just wanted to tell you guys that 'cause it's really getting old.
Much Love,Elizabeth(Lizzie)

to "kk"-
I auditioned at the ashville mall last sat., they were looking for violet beauregard and mike teavee (the girl who chews gum and turns into a blueberry, and the boy who is obsessed with tv) I'm not sure about other auditions, but i think they are auditioning for veruca salt at private schools and they might be doing other auditions for violet and mike. I'm not sure if that was much help, but i hope it can give you a starting point.
Good luck to all auditioning!

To whomever sportygal is. I know for a fact they did not have open casting; such as going to schools for this movie. For one Tim Burton already had ideas of people for main characters in his mind, b4 the project was even let out to the public. And second they have already started somewhat fliming or the ideas. And I know this b.c my cousin's brother (half brother that is)one of the site directors for the flim. So I know this for a fact. Don't come on here and get peoples hopes up when its not neccisary. Trust me I am also an inspiring actress and I begged an pleaded with my him ( my cousin's brother that is) and he said no. Because Tim already knew who, and what he was looking for.

You're sounding rather harsh 'BeenHereB4". If you had just taken a quick little look on-online you would have noticed that there is a newspaper article coming out of Ashville, NC announcing the auditioning time, from 3-7, in a local mall sometimes back in Feb.
I'm sorry that your cousin's, uncle's grandmother's half-aunt with the hangnail (did I get that right?) couldn't get you an audition but perhaps it's because he with locations which would have meant he had nothing to do with casting and couldn't have gotten you an audition for anything. In fact, his reputation would have been a bit tarnished if he had tried to use that sort of position to his advantage. It's unprofessional, which might be exactly why he lied to you as he did - just to shut you up. No offense but you did beg and plead. What was he supposed to do?
In any case, just to clear the record, as of this time it doesn't seem to be the case that either the role of Violet or Mike have been cast. So perhaps it's still anybody's game!
It seems as though there were open calls in at least Ashville, perhaps Dallas and who knows, maybe other cities as well.
The best way to get any role, it seems, it to start working. Take acting classes. Get a headshot. Get an agent. Etc.
Yes,m it might be a little late to take that traditional route "Charlie", but there will be many more wonderful roles to come in your lifetime. So prepare and good luck.

hey does any one know when they are actually doing the auditions in london cos i cant find any info anywhere thanks
Posted by: carrie bell on May 29, 2004 12:37 PM
Guys!
If you want to be an extra you don't need any training, not if your a child extra. However unless they hold open auditions you won't be able to get a main part without having an agent or going to a stage school with contacts.
I can suggest Spotlight (agency in ur in the uk) but its hard to get into. Or if u live in the uk read the stage for information.

Hey!
Willy Wonka will be so great played by Johnny Depp...Shame there isn't any parts where a girl gets to kiss him! I'd be first in line! LOL. Can I get a heads up too about any auditions, or even extras, I'm a drama student, so hopefully won't bee too bad an actress...Just to be in the same breathing space as Johnny Depp!
Should be made in England seen as its an English book! Yay me!
Thnx
Love
