As I understand it, it wasn't done for synergy reasons. Gates had to clean out petty cash and didn't want to take the tax hit. By announcing this deal on April 1st, he just managed to squeek this deal in before the 15th.

I can't really see the connection in why Gates would buy, out of all the differents kinds of investments, DeBeers. He should just give his money to charity... he's got plenty of it!
